*Upcoming Webinar* Don't Be a Richard! Foot and Mouth Disease: A Producer Perspective

Free webinar for beef producers on foot and mouth disease

What is the risk to producers and farmers in Canada, and what can they do to minimize this risk? This webinar is geared towards producers to discuss the who, what, where and why of FMD and how it can directly impact beef cattle operations.

Register for the live January 15 webinar to hear from our panelists: Karin Schmid, beef production and extension lead for the Alberta Beef Producers, and Dr. Leigh Rosengren, DVM, chief veterinary officer for the Canadian Cattle Association, and industry co-chair for Animal Health Canada.

SPEAKERS

Karin Schmid – Beef Production and Extension Lead for Alberta Beef Producers

Karin Schmid, Beef Production and Extension Lead for Alberta Beef Producers

Karin grew up on a mixed farm near Keoma, Alberta, raising purebred Simmental cattle and grain, and is still involved in the family operation to a limited extent. She has a master’s degree in agriculture from the University of Alberta, and her thesis focused on the genetic and metabolic factors affecting feed efficiency in beef cattle. Before joining Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) in 2011, Karin spent just over four years with the Canadian Hereford Association as its breed development coordinator.

At ABP, Karin is the beef production and extension lead, providing technical support in the areas of cattle health and welfare, research and production practices. She works very closely with several industry and government organizations on issues of importance to the industry, and a large part of her job is translating science to producers and explaining producer needs to researchers and other stakeholders.

Dr. Leigh Rosengren – Chief Veterinary Officer, Canadian Cattle Association, and Industry Co-Chair, Animal Health Canada

Leigh Rosengren

Dr. Rosengren graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan in 2001. After graduation, Leigh worked in mixed animal practice in Humboldt and Weyburn, Saskatchewan. She received a PhD in veterinary epidemiology from the University of Saskatchewan in 2008 and established a consulting service for Canada’s livestock and poultry sectors to help address their animal health and food safety concerns.

In recent years, Leigh has been focused on her family farm and cow-calf operation. While doing so, she completed a master’s degree in agribusiness from Kansas State University in 2021, with the intention of expanding consulting services to incorporate a more financial focus on health and management decisions.

Leigh recently joined the Canadian Cattle Association as its animal health and care lead. She also sits on the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association as a director and serves as the Animal Health and Welfare Committee chair.
